National Service Scheme – A Tradition of Service at KCAEFT
The National Service Scheme (NSS) has been an integral part of Kelappaji College of Agricultural Engineering & Technology (KCAET) and Kelappaji College of Agricultural Engineering & Food Technology (KCAEFT) for many years. Guided by the motto “Not Me, But You,” our NSS units have consistently worked to blend classroom learning with community service, shaping socially responsible graduates who are conscious of their role in nation-building.
Over the years, NSS volunteers of our college have:
- Organized awareness campaigns, medical camps, and social outreach programmes.
- Led environmental protection activities such as tree planting, waste management, water conservation, and biodiversity initiatives.
- Actively contributed to disaster relief and charity campaigns, supporting patients, farmers, and local communities in times of need.
- Celebrated national and international days with meaningful programmes that foster civic sense, scientific awareness, and cultural pride.
- Conducted special camps every year in adopted villages, bringing together youth, local communities, and experts for mutual learning and development.
While our service legacy spans decades, the last three years have been especially vibrant.
Volunteers participated in Republic Day, Voters’ Day, and National Girl Child Day programmes. The Clean & Green Campus Campaign mobilized more than 200 participants, while Martyrs’ Day and World Cancer Day were observed with creativity and awareness classes. On World Water Day, painting competitions and bird water fountains promoted conservation.
The seven-day camp at Tavanur combined agricultural and water surveys, health camps, scientific waste management, and old-age home visits, reinforcing the values of empathy and service.
This year saw a leap in impact. A biogas plant was installed on campus, the Thumburmuzhi model waste system rebuilt, and tree planting drives undertaken. NSS received recognition from Tavanur Panchayat for contributions to Navakeralam Karmapadhathi.
Volunteers led drug abuse eradication programmes, biodiversity planting, reading day events, yoga day celebrations, anti-ragging week activities, and Gandhi Jayanti human chains. The Meri Mati Mera Desh campaign involved planting 75 indigenous trees.
NSS Day was marked by five new campaigns: Thanal, Kaniv, Velicham, Knowledge League, KCAET-HACK. Social campaigns raised funds for medical aid.
The special camp “Prakrithi” at Karuvarakundu featured waste management surveys, women’s health checkups, rural farm visits, cultural programmes, and trekking – a powerful blend of service and self-discovery.
The Velicham campaign raised over ₹23,000 for medical treatment, while disaster relief collections supported flood victims and palliative care. Volunteers spread awareness on issues like AIDS, cancer, chickenpox, elder abuse, and Black Day through posters, social media campaigns, and campus events.
Health initiatives included eye donation and checkup camps, dental and cancer screenings, and the formation of a 60+ member blood donor group. Environmentally, the unit planted trees, built bird fountains, installed assorted waste bins, and handed over a Mini Material Collection Facility (MCF) to the Panchayat, built entirely from campus scrap.
Students shone in debates, writing competitions, food stalls, and photography contests, while one of our volunteers, Mr. Abhiram M A, represented Kerala Agricultural University at the South Zone Pre-RD Parade Camp.
The special camp “Aaranyakam 2K25” at Mannarkkad included forest cleaning, wall painting, creation of a mini-forest (Vidya Vanam), trekking, cultural evenings, and interactions with tribal communities of Attappadi – showcasing the holistic vision of NSS.
For decades, NSS at KCAET/KCAEFT has shaped students into responsible citizens with a commitment to society, environment, and culture. Every batch of volunteers carries forward this tradition by innovating new projects while preserving the spirit of earlier years.
From health to environment, literacy to leadership, disaster relief to social innovation, our NSS story is one of continuity and commitment. And as we step into the future, our volunteers remain determined to uphold the values of service, solidarity, and sustainability – living the timeless motto: “Not Me, But You.”
